About Us

Our History

The Department of Hindi, established in 1963 is one of the oldest University Departments of the state. It was a part of the erstwhile Kerala University. At the early stage, it was functioning in the Govt. Maharaja’s College Campus, Ernakulam. In 1967 it was shifted to Thrikkakara campus as ‘Ernakulam Centre’ of Kerala University. In 1971 the ‘Ernakulam Centre’ was converted into Cochin University. In 1986, it has been renamed as Cochin University of Science and Technology. From the period of its inception, the Department has blossomed into one of the prestigious Departments among Indian University Departments engaged in the teaching and research in Hindi Language and Literature.

Our Vision

The Department of Hindi aims to impart Hindi Language and Literature in non-Hindi Speaking areas. It intends to promote national integration and the feeling of oneness.

Our Mission

To teach, promote and propagate the national/official language Hindi.To train and equip the students in comparative Literature and translation for cultural enrichment.To create a conducive environment for research in inter and intra language literature studies.To nurture a healthy academicculture that leads to the optimisation of productiveness of the society.

About Us

As one of the leading Departments of the country, it is having interactive programmes with so many institutions and organizations. The Department of Electronics, Govt. of India has sanctioned a major project (CALT — Computer Aided Language Teaching) to the Department in 1992 considering its infrastructural facilities. The UGC has selected the Department for DRS programme for three consecutive periods i.e.,1994-99,2001- 2006 & 2007-2012. Now UGC-DSA Phase—I is completed successfully. Government organizations, like; Sahitya Academy, Central Hindi Directorate and Central Hindi Institute are very keen to interact with the Department and progress is continuing.

By implementing DRS programme, a special assistance programme of UGC (SAP),the Department is engaged in developing it into an Inter-Disciplinary Centre. The aim ofthe Department is to establish itself as a pioneering centre for the Studies in ComparativeLiterature which can cater the needs of the Researchers all over India.

The Department is one of the leading centres of Research in Hindi and it has produced 218 Ph.D. so far. Presently 34 Research Scholars are working in the Department at different levels of their research work.

In the field of publication, the Department has contributed much and its aim is to publish a good number of valuable volumes in different languages in future. During the second phase of DRS Programme sanctioned to the Department, a DRS library, has been established exclusive for research scholars to carry out quality research in the present _research scenario.

In its long tenure of working, the Department has conducted International, National, State wise Seminars, Symposiums and Lecture Series. Through these programmes, the Department could able to honor and welcome eminent Hindi-Malayalam literary figures and Socio-Cultural thinkers of the respected areas.

The Department continues to maintain its stature carried over for the last five decades as a research-oriented Centre in South India. Majority of the alumni of the Department have been placed in teaching profession, Mass Media and in the Official Language Cell of the Central Government Departments, Reserve Bank and Other Banks, Research Institutes and Public Sector Undertakings.

About University

Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) was initially constituted as the University of Cochin through an Act of Kerala Government on 10th July 1971. The University of Cochin was re‐constituted as Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) in February 1986, redefining its objectives as “promoting Graduate and Post‐Graduate studies and Advanced Research in Applied Sciences, Technology, Industry, Commerce, Management and Social Sciences.” CUSAT is now a world-ranking university with the specific purpose of developing higher education, emphasizing post-graduate studies and research in applied science, technology, industry, humanities, and commerce. CUSAT has consecutively been figured in the Times Higher Education World Ranking since 2017. The Times ranks around 1500 best universities worldwide annually with around 60 universities from India out of 967. CUSAT has also found a place in the QS World University Ranking and the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) of the India Government.
